Genetics and Genealogy – Creating a Family History Narrative
Sunday, April 11, 2021 | 2:00–3:00 p.m.
In this presentation, Dr. Schmitt Lavin will provide an overview of work done by herself, her colleague Dr. James Doan and students while teaching this subject in an NSU Honors course over the past 15 years. Ms. Abbas will then present highlights from her Honors thesis focusing on the central themes in her family’s narrative including the refugee experience in escaping from India to Pakistan during the Partition, and how this has aided in the process of her own self-discovery. Creating an ethnographic memoir can serve as a guide to others who are looking to understand their own identity through exploration of their cultural and familial roots. Presented by Ms. Feza Abbas, NSU Biology Student and Dr. Emily Schmitt Lavin, Professor and Chair, Department of Biological Sciences, Halmos College of Arts and Sciences, Nova Southeastern University.
