Family History Today: Ask a Genealogy Librarian – Unique Sources at the Center for Jewish History

Thursday, August 24, 5 pm Eastern Time (U.S./Canada)

The Center for Jewish History (CJH) houses the largest archive of the modern Jewish experience outside of Israel, illuminating the history and culture of Jewish communities around the world. Among the vast collections at CJH are many unique documents and hard-to-find books that provide information on individuals, families, and places. A few examples include client files of immigrant aid organizations, burial lists of landsmanshaftn (hometown societies) in New York, and books on Jewish history and life in towns and regions across the globe. However, finding items that pertain to your family history can be tricky.  Moriah Amit, the CJH’s Senior Genealogy Librarian, will answer your questions about searching our online catalog, using archival finding aids, and determining what’s available online, as well as those about specific record types or collections. This program is appropriate for beginner and intermediate-level researchers of all Jewish backgrounds, Ashkenazi and Sephardi/Mizrahi. Please send us your most important questions by August 7 by replying to your registration confirmation email. NOTE: We will only accept questions submitted by individuals who have registered for this program.

Tickets: Pay what you wish. Register for a Zoom link here.

This program is sponsored by the Ackman & Ziff Family Genealogy Institute at the Center for Jewish History.

The Early Crypto-Jews, Conversos, and Marranos of Florida

RECOMMENDED BY OUR MEMBER SYLVIA GURINSKY

The Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience is planning a free Zoom program next month about the early Crypto-Jews of Florida. Here's a link to the page with the information, including how to register:

August 10 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

On September 8, 1565, Spanish colonizers established the city of St. Augustine in Florida, making it the oldest continuously occupied European-founded settlement in the United States. New historical research has revealed that among its founders were the first Jews to step foot in America – but their mysterious status as Crypto-Jews, Marranos, Conversos, New Christians, and “Hidden Jews” has, until recently, obscured their true identities.

Rabbi Merrill Shapiro, founder and president of the St. Augustine Jewish Historical Society, will explore how the long-reaching arm of the Spanish Inquisition invaded even the United States, and shed light on how historians and scholars have painstakingly uncovered the truth about the first Jews in America.

This is a free, virtual lecture. Click here to register for the Zoom link.
