Dear Members of the Board, Survivors, Teachers, Students, Volunteers and Friends,

As the Holocaust Documentation & Education Center continues to feature and offer a wide variety of online programs focused on various topics of the Holocaust, today we are adding the following program from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Chautauqua Institution:

Program:         "The Tehran Children: Iran's Unexpected Connection to the Holocaust"

Date:                Tuesday, December 8, 2020

Time:               7:00 PM

Platform:        This event will take place online and is free to the public.

Registration is required. Please click HERE to register.

During World War II, Iran gave shelter to thousands of Polish Jews fleeing the Nazis. Within this group who traversed vast parts of the Soviet Union to Iran, there were 1,000 young people who became known as the Tehran Children.

This history is less familiar in Iran, where the regime has become known for anti-Zionism, antisemitism, Holocaust denial, and the suppression of access to Holocaust history.

During this two-part digital program, join experts to learn about Iran's lesser-known connection to the Holocaust, hear about a daughter's decade-long journey in the footsteps of her "Tehran Child" father, and examine why retracing this history is relevant today, not only to Iranians, but all of humanity.

Part One: Why was Iran's wartime rescue of Jewish orphans obscured?

Speakers:

Dr. Mikhal Dekel, Author, Tehran Children: A Holocaust Refugee Odyssey, and Director, Rifkind Center, City College of New York

Arash Azizi, Author, The Shadow Commander: Soleimani, the US, and Iran's Global Ambitions

Moderator:

Dr Edna Friedberg, Historian, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

Part Two: How did this history impact one descendant of Jewish refugees?

Speakers:

Dr. Mikhal Dekel, Author, Tehran Children: A Holocaust Refugee Odyssey, and Director, Rifkind Center, City College of New York

Moderator:

Sony Ton-Aime, Director, Literary Arts, Chautauqua Institution

JEWS WHO FLED IRAN FROM NAZIS Online program

From Jan Meisels Allen
Chairperson IAJGS Public Records Access Monitoring Committee

"Starting Tuesday December 8, 2020 the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) , in partnership with the Chautauqua Institution will present an online program on Iran’s connection to Jews who escaped the Holocaust.  This is a two-part online event entitled, “The Tehran Children: Iran’s Unexpected & Suppressed Connection to the Holocaust”. This was inspired by the 2019 memoir  Tehran Children:  A Holocaust refugee by Mikhal Dekal.

The memoir tells the story of over a million Polish Jews who fled the Nazis during the Holocaust into the Soviet Union – specifically focusing on the nearly 1,000 children who were sent to Iran. The author's father, Hannan Teitel, was one of these children.

The event is part of The Sardari Project: Iran and the Holocaust, the result of a collaboration between the USHMM and the Persian-language website: https://iranwire.com/en This website is also in Farsi."

The series will feature 13 article and nine videos. In addition to the IranWire’s.com Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/Iranwire) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/iranwire3) channels it is available at the https://iranwire.com/en/special-features?filter=sardari-project

A Journey Through the Ukrainian-Jewish Encounter - PDF - UJE's Traveling Exhibit Catalogue and Narrative from UJE (Ukrainian-Jewish Encounter)

"UJE’s traveling exhibit A Journey Through the Ukrainian-Jewish Encounter: From Antiquity to 1914 visited four major Canadian cities in 2015, winning wide acceptance and praise from both Ukrainian and Jewish communities and general audiences.  Now, a catalogue by the same name builds on the exhibition’s narrative and more intricately explores the many-sided relationship between Ukrainians and Jews, two peoples who for nearly two millennia have inhabited the land that comprises contemporary Ukraine."

THE SECRETS OF THE GREAT SYNAGOGUE OF VILNA (Free) Presented by the Vilna Shul of Boston

SEE PART ONE OF THE SECRETS OF THE GREAT SYNAGOGUE BY CLICKING THIS LINK

Watercolor by Juozas Kamarauskas (1899)

The Secrets of the Great Synagogue of Vilna Image

"Be among the first to see a sneak peek of "The Secrets of the Synagogue", a film that documents the uncovering of the grand religious institution in Vilnius. This glimpse into the uncovering of the Great Synaogogue of Vilna will be followed by a riveting discussion with part of the team that made this amazing discovery possible: US archaeologist Dr. Richard Freund, Lithuanian Film Project Director Loic Salfati, geoscientist and GPR (ground penetrating radar) expert Dr. Harry Jol, and lead cartographer, Dr. Phil Reeder.

The Great Synagogue of Vilna, the spiritual and physical home of the Lithuanian Jews, one of the oldest and most significant religious and cultural sites of Eastern European Jewry, was ransacked during WWII and destroyed by the Soviets in 1956. An elementary school was built on top of the remains.  The film chronicles the process to uncover, document and now preserve the remains of this synagogue. Please note that you will see only a portion of the film, not the entire film, as it is not yet completed! We expect to premiere the film in its entirety in the Spring of 2021. As part of the process to find a fitting memorial for the synagogue and its associated buildings, a joint expedition of professionals, students and volunteers from the Lithuania, US, Canada, Israel, and other nationalities have formed to excavate, preserve and present in-situ the remains of the Great Synagogue as part of an overall plan  for safeguarding the memory of the Jewish community of Vilnius, the 'Jerusalem of Lithuania'. This documentary tells their story and the story of the Great Synagogue, a symbol of lost civilization and thanks to the Good Will Foundation of the Jewish Community of Lithuania this work has been on-going since 2015. "

You will receive a link to watch an exclusive preview (full documentary to be completed Sept. 2021) several days PRIOR to the Nov. 1 panel discussion.

Subject: [IAJGS Leadership] Misleading Google Results
Dear IAJGS Leaders,

We routinely rely on Google to find information and websites that we want to access. Yet the top sites returned may not be what you want but rather sites that paid for top placement. Other sites below are ordered based on secret and regularly changing algorithms. Yet, most of us continue to click on one of to top sites listed and rarely go to the second or third page. This can be an expensive mistake. This month's Practicing Safe Computing article provides some real-life examples of deceptive Google results.

"Misleading Google Results" has been published in the November, 2020 issue of "Venturing into Our Past", the Newsletter of the Jewish Genealogical Society of the Conejo Valley and Ventura County (JGSCV). Current and prior newsletters are freely available at the Society's website, http://www.jgscv.org/

All Practicing Safe Computing articles published to date are available in a single PDF that includes an index. This resource is freely accessible at https://tinyurl.com/SafeComputingArticles

We will continue to update this resource with monthly articles. Consider placing a link to it on your society's web site or otherwise sharing it with your members as an ongoing free resource, reminding them when new articles are available.

If you have any questions or suggestions for future articles, please contact me.
