Watch EXODUS:1947 Free-A Message from the Holocaust Documentation Center

We are thrilled to announce that Elizabeth Rodgers, the Director and Producer of Exodus 1947: The Ship That Launched a Nation, has graciously and generously made it possible for the HDEC to offer this wonderful educational online screening opportunity at no charge for two days April 28 and April 29.

As fate would have it, we realized after we chose these screening dates, they were meant to be; especially since the eve of Yom Ha'atzmaut, Israel's 72nd Birthday (Israeli Independence Day), is on April 28, 2020 this year and will be celebrated through to the next day, April 29.

We especially wish to thank and acknowledge Elizabeth Rodgers, for her tremendous commitment and devotion and for making this online screening possible!

Sousa Mendes Foundation Upcoming Event

JGSGM Member and Vice President of Membership.
Robert would like to share this Sousa de Mendes event announcement with our members.

🎥✨🍿You’re invited to join us for an online FILM AND DISCUSSION EVENT featuring the new documentary “Nobody Wants Us” 🎥✨🍿
About the film
In 1940, a ship called the S.S. QUANZA left the port of Lisbon carrying several hundred Jewish refugees to freedom. Most of them held life-saving visas issued by the Holocaust rescuer Aristides de Sousa Mendes. But events went terribly wrong, and the passengers became trapped on the ship when no country would accept them. Nobody Wants Us Film tells the gripping true story of how Eleanor Roosevelt stepped in to save the passengers on board, believing them to be “future patriotic Americans” rather than “undesirables” as labeled by the US State Department. This is an episode in American history that everyone should know!
Following the film, join Holocaust survivor and educator Miriam Klein Kassenoff and award-winning PBS producer and independent filmmaker Laura Seltzer-Duny for a discussion of this little-known episode in Holocaust history and its relevance for today. The discussion will be moderated by Olivia Mattis, President of the Sousa Mendes Foundation.
Our Virtual Screening Plan:
3:00 p.m. EST: We meet virtually to say hello via a Zoom link that we’ll send to all of the attendees.
3:15 p.m. EST: We watch the film.
4:00 p.m. EST: After the screening, we will discuss the film, its context and its relevance to today.
EVENT REGISTRATION
The ZOOM link for the discussion will be sent to all who register for the event.  To register please CLICK HERE https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfsO6y3Zqo2lOe0i6pBXris7dHMpWbRcsVb0fhcE9ztU-U4dQ/viewform

The U.S. Seventh Army’s 45th Infantry Division, the 42nd Infantry Rainbow Division and the 20th Armored Division entered Dachau rescuing 32,000 prisoners.  Dachau was the first Nazi concentration camp established in 1933.  Forty railway cars filled with decomposing bodies were found near the camp, as the Nazis did not have time to send them to the crematorium before they fled due to the American’s nearing the camp.

Fold3.com, part of the Ancestry family of companies, produced a blog post about Dachau’s liberation which may be read at:
https://blog.fold3.com/april-29-1945-the-liberation-of-dachau/

The blog post says between 1933-945 approximately 188,000 prisoners were incarcerated there and 28,000 prisoners died in the camp.  To see the records from the camp, the Dachau Entry Registers, historical records from the U.S. Seventh Army and a secret diary kept by an inmate at Dachau which was recovered by American soldiers you can search them for free at:

When you find a record you would like to download or save to your computer you can right click with your mouse and save it to your computer or on the upper right there is a “tool” app if you click you can download and print.  There are other opportunities to add an annotation or comment with the app with the “plus sign” on a flag.

To read, download or print the record  You will have to register with your name, email and address and password. No credit card information is required.

Fold3 makes their ENTIRE Holocaust collection free access.  Go to: https://www.fold3.com/browse/115/
