THE SECRETS OF THE GREAT SYNAGOGUE OF VILNA (Free) Presented by the Vilna Shul of Boston

SEE PART ONE OF THE SECRETS OF THE GREAT SYNAGOGUE BY CLICKING THIS LINK

Watercolor by Juozas Kamarauskas (1899)

The Secrets of the Great Synagogue of Vilna Image

"Be among the first to see a sneak peek of "The Secrets of the Synagogue", a film that documents the uncovering of the grand religious institution in Vilnius. This glimpse into the uncovering of the Great Synaogogue of Vilna will be followed by a riveting discussion with part of the team that made this amazing discovery possible: US archaeologist Dr. Richard Freund, Lithuanian Film Project Director Loic Salfati, geoscientist and GPR (ground penetrating radar) expert Dr. Harry Jol, and lead cartographer, Dr. Phil Reeder.

The Great Synagogue of Vilna, the spiritual and physical home of the Lithuanian Jews, one of the oldest and most significant religious and cultural sites of Eastern European Jewry, was ransacked during WWII and destroyed by the Soviets in 1956. An elementary school was built on top of the remains.  The film chronicles the process to uncover, document and now preserve the remains of this synagogue. Please note that you will see only a portion of the film, not the entire film, as it is not yet completed! We expect to premiere the film in its entirety in the Spring of 2021. As part of the process to find a fitting memorial for the synagogue and its associated buildings, a joint expedition of professionals, students and volunteers from the Lithuania, US, Canada, Israel, and other nationalities have formed to excavate, preserve and present in-situ the remains of the Great Synagogue as part of an overall plan  for safeguarding the memory of the Jewish community of Vilnius, the 'Jerusalem of Lithuania'. This documentary tells their story and the story of the Great Synagogue, a symbol of lost civilization and thanks to the Good Will Foundation of the Jewish Community of Lithuania this work has been on-going since 2015. "

You will receive a link to watch an exclusive preview (full documentary to be completed Sept. 2021) several days PRIOR to the Nov. 1 panel discussion.

Subject: [IAJGS Leadership] Misleading Google Results
Dear IAJGS Leaders,

We routinely rely on Google to find information and websites that we want to access. Yet the top sites returned may not be what you want but rather sites that paid for top placement. Other sites below are ordered based on secret and regularly changing algorithms. Yet, most of us continue to click on one of to top sites listed and rarely go to the second or third page. This can be an expensive mistake. This month's Practicing Safe Computing article provides some real-life examples of deceptive Google results.

"Misleading Google Results" has been published in the November, 2020 issue of "Venturing into Our Past", the Newsletter of the Jewish Genealogical Society of the Conejo Valley and Ventura County (JGSCV). Current and prior newsletters are freely available at the Society's website, http://www.jgscv.org/

All Practicing Safe Computing articles published to date are available in a single PDF that includes an index. This resource is freely accessible at https://tinyurl.com/SafeComputingArticles

We will continue to update this resource with monthly articles. Consider placing a link to it on your society's web site or otherwise sharing it with your members as an ongoing free resource, reminding them when new articles are available.

If you have any questions or suggestions for future articles, please contact me.

Best,
Hal

THE FORGOTTEN REFUGEES FILM AND DISCUSSION OCTOBER 25, 2020 AT 10:00 AM (East Coast Time))

The Forgotten Jewish Refugees Discussion
with Avi Goldwasser
Sunday, October 25th / 10:00 - 11:00 AM (East Coast Time) via Zoom
A Program of Temple Sinai of Sharon, Massachusetts

Please join us for this year's Stanley & Vera Marshall Lecture, where we will be discussing the documentary, The Forgotten Refugees, with the film's Executive Producer, Avi Goldwasser.

The Forgotten Refugees is an award winning documentary about the expulsion of Jews from Arab countries and Iran beginning in 1948 and explores the history and destruction of Middle Eastern and North African Jewish communities, some of which had existed for over 2,500 years.  Employing extensive testimony of survivors from Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Iraq and Iran, the film recounts the stories that nearly a million individuals have carried with them for so long.  Viewing the documentary and then attending the discussion are both free.
Please try to view the film prior to the discussion by going to:
